how do i set up an issue so that i can assign it to a user and get the email to go to them so they are notified?
Add an 'Assigned To' attribute with the 'User' type, unless you're already using the built-in Bugs and Tasks types of issues. Then create a public alert based on the 'Assigned to me' view.
can you give me some more assistance with this as i can't follow your message.
the assigned to field is set to user and is populated against the issue. when creating an alert, i don't get the option to choose the assigned to view - all it asks is whether i want immediate etc and when i want the alert to run.

If the view doesn't exist, you have to create it first.
